SB clones.

to show how things have changed. i bought a car that had the blown 427 swapped to a more affordable 327 in 72 but all else remained until a company that i beleive to be pro team bought it in 88 and rather than return it to a 427 opted to scavange the BB parts and sell it as a SB all owners after that were clueless to the fact it was a BB car. this history is documented. my point is there was a day the value between a SB and BB was close and not worth putting back.

After recording all 1963's that I have come across over the last 14 yrs. or so, my WAG as to how many remain would be anywhere from 35-45% of the production total for the year.

Glen--you sound very self-assured as you make that statement about smallblocks being made, faked, clone, etc. Tell me exactly what you are saying. That someone is going to fake a base-motor, 3-speed, no-option car? What are they going to make that from? Thin air? A 435-hp full option car? You say I could be fooling myself--exactly what does that mean?

This women I met near me had a base 57 Corvette. V8-one Carb-3 speed-soft top- black wall tires - black paint and that's it, original owner.
I would have loved to have a Corvette like that.
Gave it it her grandson who said he would keep it for ever , then sold two days later

I think someone with access to the Polk database of registered cars might be able to find out how many of each year are registered, which is a subset of how many cars there are, so at least you would know the minimum number of each year. Wrecks, thefts, racing, customs all have had probably reduced the remaining lot....the guess would be cars left ranging from somewhere between 50-80% left of each year.

Mike, Maybe he was talkin about from 2 speed to three speed. Or even from a one speed to a three. That would have been a rare one wouldn`t it. I didn`t understand his comment either. I think it goes back to the old saying"If you only have negative to say you`re better saying nothing" Mike McKay

I think Dino's reference to the Polk database may be what I recall from some previous research I did and a previous thread on this board.

There is a company in Chicago(?) that may be called Polk that has the complete registration records for every car in every state back to 1930 or so. They use this data to prepare various market analysis reports for the car manufacturers and other interested parties who are willing to pay for the information.

So, the good news is that within this data base is the registration history of every Corvette ever registered, and a current count of all the ones that are still registered.

The bad news is that for those of us trying to research a particular car, various privacy laws prevent the release of car-specific info to anyone other than law enforcement officers.

However, in my view, the privacy restrictions would NOT prevent the release of statistical data that simply reports how many of a given production year Corvettes are presently registered.

Since this company (Polk?) basically makes its money by selling statistical information from its data base, I suspect that for a price, the NCRS could obtain this information. I think that would be a very interesting bit of information for NCRS members, and I wonder what the cost might be.

I did some internet search and cannot find a web site for The Polk Company but found numerous references to their data and database.

It would be worth a little time if someone in the Chicago area could find their phone number and inquire about the possibility and cost of getting historical information about Corvettes.

A faint hope would be they would provide it to a Non Profit organization.
